Fall Prevention

On the third day of Christmas we explore the work thats been shared around Falls Prevention.

Can RED frames reduce falls

The hospital environment can be challenging for service users with cognitive or sensory impairments due to a lack of contrast between walls, floors and equipment. As we age we lose the ability to differentiate colours clearly, spatial awareness reduces and perception of depth decreases.https://fabnhsstuff.net/fab-st...

The Fylde and Wyre falls car operates as a collaborative between the North West Ambulance Service and Fylde and Wyre CCG. Manned by a Paramedic and Nurse/Physiotherapist/OT from the local Rapid Response Team. The pilot model started 2 years ago in response to the rising number of 999 calls being received and the recommendations from the Keogh Report (2013) as to how ambulance services should see and treat more patients at home. You can see how the service works here It is tasked to 999 calls involving patients over the age of 65 who fall either at home or in public. In 2 years it has attended over 1300 patients and been able to treat over 50% of patients at home keeping the most vulnerable people away from the local emergency department.

Aintree Falls Prevention Collaborative ‘Change Package’ The problem Preventing inpatient falls has been a problem for the acute sector for many years and is associated with high risk for both the patient and the organisation. Approaches to risk reduction are complex because of the many factors involved and the published advice is plentiful. The challenge is to develop an approach which is both effective and sustainable. You can find their solution here

The Falls Prevention Fuel Tank video is an educational resource for raising awareness of risk factors for falls and things that can be done to reduce them.It emphasises prevention and early intervention by using the analogy of a car fuel tank, focusing on the importance of 'topping your tank up regularly' to prevent risk factors for falls ever arising, rather than reacting to them once a fall has occurred. It was developed by Cardiff and Vale UHB with funding from Public Health Wales and the Cardiff and Vale Health Charity, and support from 1000 Lives Wales and the Prudent Healthcare National Taskforce for Falls Prevention in Wales.Service users were involved in the production of the video to provide feedback and input, as well as input from the multidisciplinary team and partner organisations. The video is available in both English and Welsh language formats, as well as subtitled versions of each language.https://fabnhsstuff.net/fab-st...
