Representatives from the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) presented West Suffolk Hospital with the acclaimed anaesthetic clinical services accreditation (ACSA).
It comes after the hospital demonstrated excellent performance across a variety of key areas, including the overall care pathway for patients who need anaesthesia with a particular emphasis on patient safety and overall patient experience.
Dr Patricia Mills, clinical director for anaesthesia, theatres and critical care at the hospital, said: “We are delighted to become one of the first anaesthetic departments in the country to receive this accolade. The accreditation acknowledges our commitment to providing patients with excellent and safe care and is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire theatre team.”The ACSA scheme was launched in 2013, with Homerton Hospital becoming the first to win the accreditation. To date, more than 56 NHS anaesthetic departments have begun working towards meeting the standards.
Dr Dan Connor, lead ACSA reviewer, said: “The overall impression for the reviewing team was that there was clear leadership and a focus on patient safety at West Suffolk Hospital, with patients placed at the centre of the service. There were many aspects of the service delivery that were exemplary, in particular the care of patients with learning impairment or dementia.”
