Surgical related burns are a recognised safety issue in peri-operative care and the consequences can be serious for both patients and staff.

There were 336 claims for surgery related burns between 2009-2014 - who knew?

diathermy 2171 of these claims were successful - 79 were diathermy related, 37 were chemical related with 20 being equipment related.

These successful claims cost nearly 4 million pounds.

Its worth reflecting on what that money could have been spent on .........

Many of these incidents can be prevented by adopting safe systems of practice in relation to vigilance, monitoring, use of equipment and skin cleansing agents.
