‘SHMI’ing On Up! - Improving Our Summary Hospital-level Mortality Indicator Score featured image

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust was one of the 65 Acute Trusts with a higher than expected SHMI (Summary Hospital level Mortality Indicator) and the 13th highest in England. 

The following workstreams were implemented : 

Robust medical examiner process

Systematic learning from deaths process

Efficient coding and documentation process 

Review of clinical pathways and quality improvement 

This  led to reduction of SHMI by 10%. 

Areas for improvement were highlighted to sustain the improvement of this QI project.
