Sharing positive stories and improving communication - Facebook

At ULHT we have set up a closed Facebook page for staff to share positive stories and lift morale as we so often see the negative in the press and need reminding of the FAB stuff too. Initially set up for nurses it didn't take long for all staff to want to engage, when a new CEO joined in Dec 2015 and heard about the group - which had 400 staff at the time he was so impressed he challenged us to get 1000 members by the new year and suggested it was used as a tool for communication across the Trust. Staff do not always have time to access their work emails for updates and many never even access a computer particularly out porters, housekeeper and HCSWs, this group has brought together everyone. The closed group has had a positive impact on morale.

Be Happy- promoting positive health and well-being for children

We  know that many children and young people are struggling with the pressures of today's society and their emotional health and lack of adequate support is often headline news.As a school nurse (and a mother) I get to see these struggles first hand.

As part of completing a Post Graduate Diploma in Child and Adolescent Mental Health at the University of Central Lancashire I designed a tool to be used with children and young people. This tool is a leaflet with the letters BE HAPPY on the front and corresponding words on the back to be completed with the child or young person. Each letter covers an issue that I have found contributes to some of the difficulties young people can face and all areas are evidence based.

Changing young people’s behavior and encouraging health life styles can seem like a challenge and if not pitched just a the right level can have little effect. Messaging for children and young people needs to be delivered in formats that they want to engage with – so we were approached by the Department of Health to work with school nurses to look at using our digital badges to get public health messages out to children and young people.

Inspire positive health changes in children and young people with health Badge Missions

Digital badges, perhaps could best be described as being similar to brownie or cubs / scout badges – but digital! We know younger children just love to collect things and for older children / young people the badges offer an opportunity to show achievements. The badge missions encourage the development of positive health skills in a fun way using the technologies that young people love to use to communicate. Digital Badges also offer a new way to value and recognise health skills and behaviours

Patient First – an innovative staff engagement programme that enables people to positively change our patients’ experience of being in hospital.

The programme has become a social movement that aims to empower our staff to recognise where improvements can be made, challenge any behaviour or standards that undermine great care, and drive forward meaningful change. The programme consists of four key elements:

  • Care in changing times
  • See it through my eyes,
  • Put yourself in my shoes
  • Make a step change.

Patient First is about taking action and making a difference to the culture of our organisation. Our staff are able to see and experience things through the eyes of the patients, and to put what they learn into action and effect real change
