International visitor finds out more about the Trust’s electronic patient record

A prestigious international visitor has praised the work on the electronic patient record (EPR) at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT).

Dr Kak Seila, the Medical Director of Battambang Provincial Hospital in Cambodia, visited the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) on Tuesday 5 March to find out about the Trust’s EPR.

Dr Seila, who works closely with the charity Transform Healthcare Cambodia, enjoyed a visit to the emergency department and medical and surgical wards to see the EPR in action and talk to staff about their experience.

The Trust’s Health Informatics team gave a presentation on the EPR journey to date and Dr Seila visited the radiology department to view medical imaging in action.

The visit was organised by Transform Healthcare Cambodia trustees - Lancaster GP Dr Paul Tynan and Jan Tynan, a registered nurse who recently retired from her role at the RLI.

Dr Seila said: “I really appreciated the varied programme of the day – it was a great insight on how the electronic patient record is benefitting local health care in Morecambe Bay.

“The Cambodian healthcare IT system is still in its infancy, and the knowledge and skills shared with me today will help me to grow the current system that is in place.”

Andy Wicks, Chief Information Officer, UHMBT, said: “We were delighted when Dr Seila expressed an interest in coming to the Trust to find out more about the work we have been doing around the electronic patient record. We hope that by sharing valuable knowledge and experience with Dr Seila that it will aid in the growth of the Cambodian healthcare IT system.”

Transform Healthcare Cambodia is a UK charity established to provide healthcare education, training and clinical expertise to support our Cambodian colleagues. Their work is carried out in an atmosphere of mutual collaboration and respect, primarily but not exclusively within the Battambang Province and in particular Battambang Referral Hospital.

Sue Smith, OBE, Deputy Chief Executive and Executive Chief Nurse, is a trustee of Transform Healthcare Cambodia.

Sue added: “I am so inspired by the Transform Healthcare Cambodia team who worked with me in Battambang hospital.

“The visit was a real opportunity for Dr Seila to learn more about the Trust’s electronic patient record and the inspirational work our Health Informatics team are part of.”
