We all know what hospital toast is like……..rubbery and cold and hated our patients! So on ward 6 at Grantham Hospital at ULHT, we had a lightbulb moment to introduce a bespoke made to order toast round for our patients.
So once patients have had their cereal, our housekeeper takes the toaster out on the to the ward on a designate toast trolley with the usual butter, marmalade etc. The dining companion then asks the patients in one bay if they would toast. The food service housekeeper then makes the toast which is served immediately whilst still hot. While the toast is cooking, the dining companion then gets the next order from the next bay
Toast is a comfort food and once you smell it…..you want to eat it!
While the patients are loving the new hot toast….its torturous for staff with the smell of hot toast wafting around the ward.
The results have been amazing ……more patients are now eating toast and cereals! We have increased nutrition at breakfast as they are eating the toast now. There is less wastage of cold rubbery toast which is saving us some money!!
