Charity Launches Unique Accessible Activities Hub
Community Integrated Care is proud to launch www.What-To-Do.co.uk, a unique online hub that offers free live accessible activities every day, in partnership with leading sports, cultural and community groups.
From creative arts classes to PE and games sessions, and even an at-home disco, What To Do provides an unique platform for people who access care and support to enjoy exciting experiences every day.
Drawing together the skills of Super League rugby league club Leeds Rhinos, Pompey in the Community Trust – the charity of Portsmouth FC, Age Exchange – a leading charity that promotes arts and creativity in social care, and the Rugby League World Cup 2021 to provide exceptional live Zoom sessions, this is a website like no other.
Community Integrated Care is one of the UK’s largest and most successful social care charities, supporting almost than 4000 people who have learning disabilities, autism, mental health concerns, dementia, and complex care needs.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the charity co-designed a range of online activities with many of its leading partners to enable hundreds of the people that it supports to stay fit, active, and socially connected during lockdown. www.What-To-Do.co.uk now shares the best of these opportunities publicly, to benefit many more disabled people.
Its packed calendar of free daily Zoom sessions includes:
- Mondays, 11am – The Creativity Club.
- Accessible arts and crafts with Age Exchange. From learning how to make puppets to designing stunning artistic scenes, people can discover brilliant new techniques with the leading artist Kate Eggleston-Wirtz.
- Tuesdays, 11.30am – Cook-Along Live With Portsmouth FC.
- Make a delicious, nutritious, and low-cost meal with Chef Gavin from Pompey in the Community. Participants are currently creating meals inspired by the 21 nations participating in the Rugby League World Cup 2021.
- Wednesdays, 11.00am – Accessible Dance.
- Discover a new dance every week with Nicola from Leeds Rhinos Foundation, from salsa to street dance.
- Thursdays, 11.00am – Chair-based exercise.
- These low intensity exercises are specially designed to be highly accessible. Every session promotes flexibility, gentle movement, and fun.
- Fridays, 11.00am – Adaptable PE and games with Newcastle Thunder stars Ted and James Chapelhow
- Just like an accessible Joe Wicks session, this programme enables people to get fit from their living room with the popular twin duo, Newcastle Thunder’s Ted and James Chapelhow!
- Saturdays, 6pm – Disco
- DJ Ged hosts his legendary Saturday night disco. Filled with fancy dress, fun and laughter, this is the ideal weekend party.
- Sundays (coming soon) – Yoga
- Unwind at the end of the week with stretching and meditation.
Every session is led by a specialist deliverer and has been designed with a focus on accessibility and inclusion. Participants can expect hours of fun creative experiences and physical activities, delivered in friendly, welcoming, and adaptable formats.
As well as hosting daily activities, the website also hosts a range of other free resources for people who access care and support and paid and family carers. This includes physical activity training packs, arts toolkits, and several programmes that promote independent living skills.
www.What-To-Do.co.uk will also be home to special seasonal celebrations, such as Halloween and Christmas events, as well as VIP meet and greets with celebrity Ambassadors and supporters of the charity.
This website has generously been supported by funding from the NHS. Community Integrated Care is also grateful for the support of Sport England, who has supported the development of the charity’s team that manages programmes of this nature.
John Hughes, Director of Partnerships and Communities at Community Integrated Care, says;
“These online activities have built around the insight and interests of the people we support, so have been a real hit. The sessions are full of joy, creativity, and excitement - from people across the UK learning the Thiller dance together for Halloween, to hundreds of people learning how to cook meals inspired by nations in the Rugby League World Cup 2021.
What To Do is about doing accessible activities differently. The programmes are fun, fresh, and person-centred. We are thrilled to now share these benefits with many more people through this unique website.
Our thanks go to our partners at the NHS and Sport England, who have provided invaluable support to help make this possible. We are grateful too to each of our delivery partners for co-designing and creating such exciting opportunities.”
Oliver Thomason, Sports Inclusion Assistant at Community Integrated Care, says:
“These sessions have been amazing for me. I have a learning disability and I’m always looking for new fun and accessible things to try. This year, I’ve learned how to cook through these classes and I now love to make a meal for my family every week. It’s been great to meet new people and to try so many new things.”
