Burton Albion - currently sitting at the top of League One and closing in on promotion to the Championship - and Queen's Hospital have created another winning team to carry out screenings at the club’s Pirelli Stadium alongside other health promotions and fundraising activities for Prostate Cancer UK.
Jyoti Shah, consultant urological surgeon at Queen’s, said: "Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer in the western world. The good news is that people tend to live with it rather than die because of it. "This campaign is about raising awareness and dispelling the myths. It’s about how we can help people who have to go through that journey. "It is innovative working with a football club and it's the perfect way of reaching a large number of people who might not want to visit a doctor or a hospital, but may be more receptive to a health initiative through the football club they support in an environment they are familiar with."
Screening will take place on Wednesday March 30 and Thursday March 31 at the football stadium for men aged 50 and over.
A range of other health activities and advice will start on Monday, March 21, and will be supported by Albion defender Damien McCrory, who is an ambassador for Prostate Cancer UK. On Good Friday a fundraising walk called Men United, led by SKY TV presenter Jeff Stelling, will see Burton Albion fans joining others to walk from Derby County’s iPro Stadium ground to the Pirelli Stadium to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK. There will also be a collection for the charity the following day, Easter Saturday March 26, when Albion play Oldham in Burton. Chairman of Burton Albion, Ben Robinson, said: "This campaign will have tangible benefits and I would urge our supporters to find out more and donate to this cause if they can."
