Hospital Care

The HSCIC holds and publishes information about multiple aspects of hospital care.

Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data is managed and published by the HSCIC and covers Accident and Emergency (A&E), admitted patient care (inpatients), outpatients and maternity.

Estates Return Information Collection (ERIC) is currently collected by HSCIC and published by the Department of Health. It has a wide variety of information on hospital estates and facilities, including; hospital food, land and site areas, energy consumption and costs, waste volume and costs, maintenance costs and car parking.

Patient-Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE) provides information on non-clinical services such as cleanliness, food, hydration, and the extent to which the provision of hospital care with privacy and dignity is supported.

Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data is managed and published by the HSCIC and covers Accident and Emergency (A&E), admitted patient care (inpatients), outpatients and maternity.

A&E1:
  • There were 5 million accident and emergency attendances recorded at major A&E departments, single specialty A&E departments, walk-in centres and minor injury units in England; an increase of 1.0 per cent from 2012-13.
 

Estates Return Information Collection (ERIC) is currently collected by HSCIC and published by the Department of Health. It has a wide variety of information on hospital estates and facilities, including; hospital food, land and site areas, energy consumption and costs, waste volume and costs, maintenance costs and car parking.
  • 9 per cent (10.7 million) of all A&E attendances were discharged ('GP follow-up required' or 'no follow-up required') and 20.9 per cent (3.9 million) of all attendances were admitted to hospital.
 
  • 6 per cent (10.1 million) of all A&E attendances were for patients under 40, 16.2 per cent (3.0 million) were for patients aged 20-29 and 14.5 per cent (2.7 million) of all attendances were for those under 10. Records showed an almost even split between male (9.2 million) and female (9.1 million) attendances.

In-patient care:
  • There were 5 million admissions2 recorded, an increase of 2.1 per cent from 2012-13.
 
  • Emergency admissions increased by 1.5 per cent, from 5.3 million in 2012-13, to 5.4 million.
 
  • Outpatient care:
  • There were 8 million outpatient appointments, of which 82.1 million (80.6 per cent) were attended.
 
  • 1 million outpatient appointments (7.0 per cent) were not attended.
 

Maternity:
  • The number of maternity deliveries taking place in NHS hospitals decreased by 3.6 per cent from 2012-13 to 646,904.
 
  • 386,937 (60.9 per cent) of deliveries in NHS hospitals were spontaneous. The percentage of caesarean deliveries slightly increased to 26.2 per cent (166,081), with a 0.7 percentage point increase from 2012-13.
 

Estates and facilities:
  • The average cost of feeding one in-patient per day was £10.48.
 
  • The average cost of car parking per hour for patients and visitors was £1.19.
