Dementia words matter: Guidelines on language about dementia

Dementia words matter: Guidelines on language about dementia featured image
As well as sharing fab NHS stuff, we can all find something from outside the NHS that we can share within.

The Dementia Engagement & Empowerment Project (DEEP) brings together groups of people with dementia from across the UK. They have produced a number of guides to help organisations and communities support people living with dementia.

Some of these guides were co-produced with people with dementia, others were created independently by groups of people with dementia.

The list of guides is constantly growing so bookmark the webpage and keep taking a look.

If you do nothing else today, please download and read the language guide. Print it and keep it close at hand. http://dementiavoices.org.uk/storage/DEEP-Guide-Language.pdf

The guide explains the words that people with dementia would like everyone to use when we talk to them and about them. Before you speak, think about how you would wish to be described if you had dementia and please challenge others that use words that reinforce negative stereotypes.
