A member of staff at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been appointed into a high profile, national role with international reach.

Dr Mohammed Munavvar, Consultant Chest Physician and Clinical Director for Respiratory Medicine at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, has been appointed as the new President (Elect) of the British Thoracic Society. This is a two year post which Mohammed will commence in December 2018.

The British Thoracic Society is the largest and only specialist society for respiratory medicine and chest diseases. The society aims to improve standards of care for people who have respiratory diseases and to support and develop those who provide that care. The society has a global reputation and a responsibility to continuously enhance and maintain the highest standards of care for patients with chest conditions, across the UK and beyond. Members of the society include doctors, nurses, respiratory physiotherapists, scientists and other professionals with a respiratory interest who share the same vision and aim to make a difference in this field.

Dr Munavvar’s appointment into the post of President (Elect) provides further opportunities for scientific collaboration and advancements in care for our patients.

Dr Munavvar said: “I must admit that I am absolutely delighted and feel honoured, but pleasantly surprised to be appointed to this post. I think it speaks highly of the recognition and profile that Lancashire Teaching Hospitals enjoys, bearing in mind the fact that the British Thoracic Society has a global reputation, with just over 3500 members.”

“I am indeed most grateful to all our team members in respiratory, endoscopy, research and the wider hospital staff who have supported me over the last 19+ years and have made this possible.”
