Children’s dreams come true at inpatient summer school #JustDoIt

Problem The summer holiday when the Hospital school is closed provides an opportunity to offer creative activities when the children on the wards have more time and space.

Impact Being in hospital can be difficult for children and their families. Fostering hope, lifting spirits, finding moments of inspiration and doing ‘normal’ things that are fun, all help families cope with the demands placed upon them when a child is in hospital. It builds resilience.

Idea ‘My dream space’ was a two-day summer school craft activity for patients in the Children’s Hospital to explore and express their spirituality through activities such as tile painting and cloth banner making. It was organised away from the ward, in fact the room became a ‘dream space’ - very different from the clinical environment.

Benefits Children were able to explore their spirituality through craft activities to express hopes and dreams and address fears at a challenging time. Through creative expression and working alongside others, children can create positive goals to promote a sense of well-being, establish relationships and build confidence. Whole families came and shared in an activity together…mirroring enjoying time together that summer holidays provide. Parents spent time being creative for their own relaxation.
