Boogie Boards a quick step towards easier recovery

img_1061.jpegProblem Standard clipboards with pencils attached were used to help voiceless patients communicate with nurses in the recovery area in theatres. This can be unwieldy, causing frustration at a time when people are feeling vulnerable.

Impact Poor communication can affect quality of care. It can be frustrating and frightening for patients if we can’t communicate. This also presents problems around patient consent and dignity. Idea  A patient at the hospital came to theatre prepared with a ‘Boogie Board e-writer’, a lightweight electronic device that is easy to handle. The idea is to introduce these e-writers and now they are available in main theatre and ENT. Benefits Patients undergoing surgical procedures that affect their ability to speak are finding it easier to communicate as they recover thanks to the new e-writers. Not only are they easy to handle but it is easy to delete errors so patients can amend as they go. Jill Holmes, Deputy Sister, Jeremy Walker, Theatre Support Worker (recovery)
