Vanguards addressing the challenges - who you gonna call ?

Professor Don Berwick, the renowned international authority on healthcare quality and improvement management, was appointed in October 2015 by The King’s Fund and NHS England to support vanguards in developing and implementing new models of care.

He has visited vanguards across the country and worked with them to develop effective leadership for system transformation and expertise in engaging the workforce in service redesign.

This week (January 16-20) Professor Berwick will be working with leaders across health and social care to tackle some of the challenges of delivering new care models across the country.

He will also be visiting vanguards across the country including Better Care Together (Morecambe Bay Health Community), Fylde Coast Local Health Economy, Connecting Care - Wakefield District and Sutton Homes of Cares.

A paediatrician by background, Professor Berwick was for 19 years the founding CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.

In 2010, he was appointed by President Barack Obama as the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (the federal agency overseeing Medicare and Medicaid), a position that he held until December 2011. He has served on the faculties of the Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health.

In 2013 he carried out a review of patient safety in the NHS on behalf of Prime Minister David Cameron. Recognised as a leading authority on health care quality and improvement, Professor Berwick has authored or co-authored more than 160 scientific articles and six books.
