Volunteers from public, private and third sector organisations across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland were out asking city shoppers “RUOK?” at the weekend.

And around 1,000 people responded, including 21 who were offered or received support from trained listeners on the day.

Some 24 volunteers from nine different organisations were in Leicester's Haymarket Shopping Centre, raising awareness of how small acts of kindness can help to boost mental wellbeing.

This was the sixth RUOK? event in three years.

The multi-agency campaign aims to show how small acts – a kind word, question or gesture – can help to lift the mood of a friend, family member, colleague or acquaintance.

The team hand business cards, chat to members of the public and encourage them to sign an RUOK? ‘pledge wall’ with a supportive message of their own. Trained advisers are on hand to provide one-to-one support for people who need it on the day.

RUOK? co-ordinator Matthew Wakely, a mental health team manager from Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust, said: “This was our sixth RUOK? event and it was another successful day. We estimate we interacted with 1,000 people, including 21 people who had meaningful conversations and were offered support, including six who received private face-to-face support from trained listeners on the day. “We gave out hundreds of business cards with more information about RUOK? The campaign is very much about the ripple effect of talking to people about the difference they can make by asking the question, and about the small acts that can lift the mood of someone who might be feeling low.”
