Widnes Vikings tackling Mental Health

widnes mindSince the summer Widnes Vikings have been working with Mind Halton on our 'Player' programme, tackling mental health.

This is part of the larger CCG funded  'First Tackle' project aimed at targeting isolation and depression through the use of sport and exercise.

Currently we are running weekly 'Player' exercise sessions at the stadium for anyone suffering from mental health problems. The sessions are hugely popular and have proved a real success. Participants gets expert gym tuition, the chance to try out different activities and the chance to train in the players performance centre. These run every Friday 5-6pm at The Select Security Stadium.

The natural progression to this project is to expand our link with Mind Halton by utilising the stadium to provide a 'New Directions - Personal Development Course'. This is a 7 week course focusing on confidence and communication delivered by MIND with support from Vikings staff.

Rebecca Jones, Vikings Health Officer, said: "We are delighted to be extending our partnership with MIND and to be able to offer more to those who need it. Positive mental health is a huge part of what we do here at Vikings Sport Foundation, and after the success of 'Player' I am looking forward to helping more people."

Nic Lunt from Mind Halton "Mind Halton are really excited to have the opportunity of working in partnership with Widnes Vikings and deliver a series of confidence courses at the Select Stadium beginning Friday 8th January 2016.

The course is aimed at adults who are experiencing low self confidence or self esteem or have found themselves in a rut; the course will allow participants the opportunity to gently stretch themselves and build up their levels of confidence and resilience.

"You can't be confident when you are willing to stay within your own comfort zone. Confidence is built by pushing way beyond what you think you can do." Byron Pulsifer
