As part of the NHS 70 celebrations, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) is hosting a number of free talks for the public across the area focusing on what local healthcare was like around the Bay.

The talks will include a display of medical equipment. They will take place on:

• Wednesday 11 July, in the Boardroom, near Trust HQ, at Westmorland General Hospital, from 6pm

• Wednesday 26 September, the Conference Room, Level 3, at Furness General Hospital, from 6pm

• Wednesday 24 October, Lecture Theatre, Education Centre, at Royal Lancaster Infirmary, from 6pm.

The free public talks, part of the Trust’s NHS 70 celebrations, will be led by Dr Peter Dyer and will focus on Eric Cooper – an oral surgeon who worked locally and who was also the dentist at the Colditz prison camp during World War Two.

Mr Cooper worked in Lancaster, Kendal and Barrow from 1952-1974 and the talk will last for around 20 minutes.

As an added bonus the talk at Lancaster on Friday 24 October will include a contribution from Dr Bryan Rhodes about the Lancaster Medical Museum. His talk will last 40 minutes

The talks are part of a series of sessions the Trust is organising for members of the public about a variety of topics.

Dr Dyer said: “Eric Cooper was the local oral surgeon from 1952 until 1974. During WW2 he was a POW in Colditz where he practised as the dentist. This presentation is a brief history of his life.”
Dr David Walker, Medical Director, UHMBT said: “On 5 July 2018 the Trust will join other health organisations around the country to mark 70 years of the NHS as part of NHS England’s NHS 70 celebrations. “The talks will be a fantastic way to celebrate the history of local health care and for local people to see some of the medical instruments that were used in the area at that period of time.”
