Winner of the Most innovative patient/people developed digital technology

This category recognises people accessing health or care services who have found digital solutions to problems they face. This may be developing a new digital technology or it may be about using an existing technology (including social media) in new and innovative ways.

Timesulin – turns insulin pens into smart pens. It is a replacement cap that tells the patient how long since their last injection. All the patient needs to do is snap Timesulin on their existing insulin pen and they are ready to start living an easier life with diabetes. No more missed or accidental double injections! Timesulin has no buttons or new systems to learn. It is a simple product that solves one of the biggest problems people living with diabetes faces every day. “Did I take my shot or not?”.

More about Timesulin

In 2011 the co-founder and CEO John Sjölund was living an active life with diabetes. He had always managed his condition really well but the one problem he had was to remember whether or not he had taken his injections. Average insulin pen user takes give injections per day and once the process gets automated, it is hard to remember when was the last time was you injected – a problem similar to “Did I lock my car?” or “Did I leave the stove on at home?” that everyone faces from time to time. With diabetes, it is really troublesome to miss an injection and if the patient double injects, there is high risk to end up in coma.

Our CEO and co-founder John has lived with Type 1 diabetes for 30 years. John’s brother and co-founder Andreas was one of the original creators of Skype and has built his career on making products that are super easy to use. Together with a third partner from MIT our team set out to solve a real life problem. We know the challenges of carb counting. We also fear night time hypos. We know that sometimes diabetes just does not make sense. By looking at actual people, actually using insulin pens, we designed Timesulin to make life with diabetes a little bit easier.

According to research 93% of people living with diabetes have problems remembering whether they have taken their dose or not. This is why we created Timesulin. Timesulin solves one problem and does that really well, really simply. All other recent diabetes innovations have focused on developing a new product (app or hardware) that the patient needs to carry with and remember to enter data into. These solutions bring one more thing for the patients to think about. What patients actually want is less stuff to think about and carry with you. The success of Timesulin lies in it’s simplicity. Timesulin integrates with patients existing insulin pens. Timesulin has enabled 100 000+ people living with diabetes and their families to live an easier and safer life
