The importance of saying thank you

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has implemented a successful new staff recognition scheme to amplify the importance of saying thank you. “Thank You” is a new recognition scheme to show appreciation to your colleagues on a daily basis, based on the organisation-wide values. Staff can log onto the portal to send a virtual “thank you” when somebody has done something which has really demonstrated our values. Individuals also receive a certificate with details of their thank you.

The scheme aims to continue to build a culture where we show recognition and our staff feel recognised for their contributions. The new scheme has been developed following feedback from staff, who said that they wanted more ways to say thank you for the little things or the big things that people do, and that they wanted more ways to be appreciated themselves too.

The tool, which launched on the 9th July 2018, has already seen staff share nearly 400 thank yous. Fiona Yates, Leadership and Engagement Advisor said: “We’re delighted to offer another way for people to say thank you and to receive meaningful feedback.

The values-based “Thank You” tool is unique because it gives people the opportunity to say thank you to who they want and when they want. It’s a daily recognition scheme which also offers people a chance to be recognised through our brand new annual “Thank You” award. " “Staff told us through our Staff Survey and Big Conversation focus groups that they really appreciated the little things such as saying thank you and wanted different ways to be recognised.”

“The “Thank You” tool aims to give more people more opportunities to receive feedback on how they are appreciated and how their behaviours are having a positive impact.”

“I’m thrilled to see staff from across the organisation and from a real diverse mix of roles already using the tool. We will evaluate the impact of this scheme, but so far we’ve had people tell us receiving their thank you really made them smile.”
