Supporting World Down Syndrome Day

Staff at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have been supporting a global awareness day today by wearing odd and vibrant socks.

Staff across the wards and departments have been celebrating World Down Syndrome Day by wearing unique colours and patterns of socks.

The idea of the global campaign to wear mismatched socks is to remind people to celebrate the things that make us all unique and individual. Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third chromosome. Symptoms of down syndrome include physical growth delays, characteristic facial features and mild to moderate intellectual disability.

Joanne Connolly, Divisional Nursing Director for Children and Young People and Critical Care said: “It is really important for us to raise awareness of down syndrome so that people can better understand the condition. Staff across the hospital have been getting involved to promote down syndrome, and support the global initiative by wearing their brightest and most unique socks.”
