Quality and safety innovation for nurses

Two nurses from Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have led an innovative project that is putting information on ‘hot topics’ relating to quality and safety literally at the fingertips of nurses, midwives and nursing assistants.

Quality Support Nurses Carla Golding and Charlotte Dunn, worked together to develop a set of 30 full colour cards attached to a silver ring that will fit handily into a nurse’s pocket and act as a quality and safety manual.

The size of a credit card, each one is printed front and back with useful information and checklists on subjects as diverse as MRSA screening; the malnutrition screening tool; acute pain scores and analgesic flowchart; and the ‘Forget Me Not’ dementia care bundle.

Carla said: “The first stage of the project involved asking nursing staff what they saw as most important in their everyday work and delivery of patient care, and what information they most needed.

Each area had their own priorities and specifics, so the next step was identifying the common themes and progressing towards creating a set of cards that would be applicable to all those using it.”

Work is now in progress to produce a set of cards specific to paediatrics and midwifery staff.
