A new initiative emphasising the importance of Quality and Improvement aims to train 150 members of staff to lead improvements across Morecambe Bay.

The Quality Service, Improvement and Redesign (QSIR) course has been introduced at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT). It equips staff with the skills to lead transformational improvements across their areas of work.

Fourteen members of Trust staff from the first cohort have successfully completed the five day, eight module, practitioner training course. They will use the skills they have gained to make improvements in their workplace, such as improving patient experience for booking appointments in breast care, reducing readmissions to hospital from the community and developing pharmacy teams on wards to manage the drugs patients take home.

UHMBT’s Improvement and LiA team aims to train 150 members of staff across the Bay Health and Care Partners over the next 18 months. The next cohort starting in November is already fully booked –with 30 staff keen to learn about QSIR.

QSIR has been developed by the ACT Academy, who is part of NHS Improvement and is designed for both clinical and non-clinical staff with significant experience in service improvement.

Helen Pye, Improvement Lead, UHMBT, said: “A great range of staff from across all care groups and corporate teams wanted to learn more about how to deliver improvement and they are now using QSIR tools and techniques to do their very own projects - to be shared at our next Brilliant Bay Day.

“The first cohort of training has been a real success with lots of networking and connections made and our trainees are already saying some really positive things about the course.”

Staff feedback has included:
“If you believe in improvement then a structured QSIR approach and toolset is the way ahead.”

“QSIR has given me the skills and confidence to drive change and transformation to benefit our patients and staff.”

Cohort three starts in February 2019. Staff can find more information on the Improvement and Listening into Action intranet pages under ‘Training’ or by contacting the team on 01524511989 or [email protected]

The ‘Better Care Together’ review of health and social care services is being led by the following ten health and care organisations: Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, Morecambe Bay Clinical Commissioning Group, Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust, Lancashire County Council, Cumbria County Council, North Lancashire Medical Services (GP Federation) and South Cumbria Primary Care Collaborative (GP Federation).
