More and more patients want to play an active role in their health, and make an impact for research in the NHS, Universities and elsewhere.

As more of us have technology in our pockets to help us bank, shop, communicate and watch our favourite show, we’re now using this technology to make an impact on our health.

Using the power of people’s own smart devices, the uMotif app and data tracking platform has been clinically-proven through trials in the NHS  [ https://www.nature.com/articles/s41531-016-0003-z   ] and also used in large-scale research studies with thousands of patients.

The platform recently won the ‘Professional’s Choice’ award at the AXA PPP HealthTech and You Awards [https://www.axappphealthcare.co.uk/healthtechandyou/2017-award/the-professionals-choice/] – the category that included judges from The Academy of Fabulous Stuff.

uMotif was selected by the judging panel for the way it helps patients to do more themselves, while also capturing data to drive new research and insight to help healthcare.

Taking a patient-centric approach means that uMotif have built a tool that patients actually love to use, and build into their daily lives: “I think it is not only a good app but by completing it daily it has made me consider why I might be in pain, or not in pain. Happy to complete it.”

Over the last year the app has captured 64 million data points from over 18,000 patients who’ve chosen to take part in research studies.

One study – Cloudy with a Chance of Pain – looked at the relationship between the weather and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and chronic pain – a question that’s been on the minds of patients for thousands of years.

Using today’s technologies, uMotif is helping Professor Will Dixon at the University of Manchester to answer it.

One study participant commented: “Completing the info on the motif is becoming part of life, and no effort at all. It certainly makes me think about what has happened in the day and how I felt.”

The platform is also being used in the NHS to capture PROMs and PREMs data, including at the Christie Hospital in Manchester.

Patients there are tracking their symptoms and completing key questionnaires to provide more data for themselves and their clinical teams. This move towards a patient-first solution is taking place across the world, and the platform is being used at a number of hospitals in the USA.

A key part of uMotif’s approach is patients’ ownership of their data.

Having reached Information Governance Level 3 and validated to Good Clinical Practice guidelines for clinical trial use, the platform is based on patients owning their data and choosing for this to be used only by specific organisations.

Having won the HealthTech and You Award, uMotif now plans on working with more researchers to make patient-centric trials a reality, in any clinical condition and any geography.
