Overwhelming efforts for nutrition and hydration week

Staff across Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have been innovatively promoting a global initiative this week. Nutrition and Hydration Week is a global event celebrated across several different sectors which aims to highlight and promote improvements in the provision of nutrition and hydration.

Staff at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals have been promoting how patients and staff alike can improve their nutrition and hydration with creative activities across the hospital.

Staff have been promoting the importance of nutrition and hydration through several activities such as creating hydration stations on the wards for visitors to stop and refuel and having a different type of food or drink on the menu each week from fruity snacks on Tasty Tuesday to smoothies and infused waters for Thirsty Thursday.

Tracy Earley, Consultant Nurse for Nutrition at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals said: “Good nutrition and hydration is critical to improving health and outcomes for our patients. This annual event has grown over the years and now almost every team has been involved, and this year particularly it gone viral.”

Gail Naylor, Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professional (AHP) Director said: “I am overwhelmed by the efforts of our teams this week in promoting Nutrition and Hydration Week. Everyone has really gone above and beyond in their teams to raise awareness of this critical part of patient and staff care. We have had brilliant feedback from our patients who have enjoyed everything from fruit juices to fruit kebabs and more! It will be great to keep this momentum going following Nutrition and Hydration Week with some of the great ideas that have been implemented.”
