Nina was arrested for dealing drugs and was sent to HMP Bronzefield. Over her sentence she managed to get clean, take on a mentor role to other prisoners addicted to drugs and work with the prison authorities to improve conditions for prisoners.
The short film shows the impact that caring and compassionate nurses can and have had on the life of an addict, at the lowest point of her life, whilst in prison the influence it has had on her recovery and future. NHS England South (South East) Health and Justice commissioning and Nursing and Quality teams heard her story and brought together a number of disparate people to enable the story to be told as effectively as possible.
Nina’s story has been transformed into a poem by Ian McMillan, an English poet, playwright, and broadcaster, and illustrated by Tony Husband a British cartoonist. The film will influence nurses, clients, prison staff and the general public, especially young people through an effective social media campaign. It has been posted on You Tube to ensure as much access as possible for use by the Universities with students in health and social care courses, Nursing students, providers to motivate their existing staff and to encourage an increase in applicants for permanent positions in the health and justice sector.
