Type 1 Diabetes requires 24/7 attention.

Nightscout allows people with Type 1 and their carers to know when to react and when to relax.

Nightscout: Liberating your glucose data at a glance. Fuelled by open hearts from within the global Type 1 community, including contributions from NHS professionals, the Nightscout application is an Open Source endeavour, supported by over 20,000 members across the globe (1,400 in the UK).

For the thousands of active users, 24/7 online support is provided by these members. Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) estimates blood glucose levels and can be used to predict undesirable and sometimes dangerous values, potentially giving people with Type 1 Diabetes (PWD) or their carers the opportunity to optimise their management and stay safe.

To do this, PWD and their carers must have access to this and associated diabetes data, such as active insulin and carbohydrates. Continuously looking at an insulin pump or CGM display is not feasible, for example in a work meeting or for a child at school.

For each connected PWD, the Nightscout application liberates their CGM and associated data from their insulin pump and CGM system, passing it securely up into the Cloud for remote display on a smart phone, web browser or smart watch. With data available at a glance, glucose patterns and trends can be quickly identified and corrected (with more insulin or with carbohydrates) sooner.

Minimising intrusion allows children to get on with being children, rather than children with diabetes, whilst their carers monitor values remotely , share intervention details between carers and – crucially – learn to relax when possible.

For adults with Type 1, Nightscout increases the opportunity for proactive self-management, avoiding extremes by enabling action to be taken before symptoms occur and allows discrete monitoring of their glucose values with a quick glance at their smart watch.

There’s also the option of giving a loved one a secondary alert device for additional peace of mind. All major CGM and insulin pump systems available on the NHS are supported, as are most wearables and smart phone platforms.

Patient investment in hardware is actively minimised (usually to less than £50).
