National accreditation for commitment to staff health and wellbeing

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has received a nationally recognised accreditation for its commitment to the health and wellbeing of its staff.

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals has been awarded with the Workplace Wellbeing Charter mark for the second time in a row; which signals its dedication to improving the health and wellbeing of staff and providing information, facilities and activities for staff.

The hospitals were assessed against a number of categories including leadership, absence management, health and safety, mental health, smoking, physical activity, healthy eating and alcohol; and performed exceptionally across the board. This assessment included a review of evidence, interviews with a variety of employees from across the hospitals, and a tour of the main sites.

Notable areas of good practice included championing wellbeing interventions, equality and diversity, and mental health promotion with the report stating that the hospitals are “committed to ensuring that health, safety and wellbeing of its employees is paramount.”

The health and wellbeing team has developed and implemented numerous activities to support the health and wellbeing of staff; including the launch of a Traumatic Incident Support Service, the first Health and Wellbeing Roadshow, mindfulness sessions and lots more.

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals first gained Workplace Wellbeing Charter accreditation in 2017 and is reassessed every two years. In this latest assessment, accreditors noted improvement in six of the eight standards, with the hospitals maintaining its achievement level in the other two standards.

Rachel O’Brien, Lead for Health and Wellbeing at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, said: “This is brilliant news and a reflection of how far we have come as an organisation in relation to the health and wellbeing of our staff; and how committed our health and wellbeing team has been to make this happen. We want to continually improve on the support that we provide to our staff and will be continuing to work hard to make this happen.”
