Walking Stick Check Week

New initiative launched to 'give walking sticks an MOT'

New initiative to encourage colleagues to think about those they know - patients, friends or family - who use a walking stick and encourage them to check the bottom of it, as a worn ferrule can cause a fall.

In the same way that we check our tyres are safe to avoid accidents, colleagues - especially those in patient-facing roles - are being urged to check patients' walking sticks to see if it has enough tread on the bottom part, known as a ferrule.

For colleagues that don't work directly with patients, you may know family, friends or neighbours who use a walking stick - please encourage them to check.

The benefits of this simple check include:

Reduced risk of falls and injury

Better posture

More steady on your feet

If the ferrule looks worn advise the patient /carer of this and to think about replacing it - new ferrules are available online, from a chemist or a mobility shop.
