The midwifery team at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been highly commended as a finalist for the Team of the Year Award in the Midlands Maternity and Midwifery Awards.

The awards were held last night by the Maternity and Midwifery Forum who aim to help midwives and healthcare professionals

to improve the wellbeing of mothers and babies around the world. The awards are a great way to celebrate success and share best practice amongst midwives.

The team were highly commended as a finalist for the Team of the Year Award for all of the work that they have been doing to improve experiences for new and expectant mothers; including being awarded Beacon status for their birth centres, developing the Maternity Voices Partnership for women to share their feedback and ideas on the services, and so much more!

Cathy Atherton, Divisional Midwifery Director at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, said: “The midwifery team are delighted to have been named as a finalist for this fantastic award. This is excellent recognition of the maternity team as a whole as we constantly strive to ensure that we provide the highest quality service for women, babies and families, during such a significant time in their lives. Key features of our service include working alongside women and their partners to make improvements as well as focusing on safety.”

Maternity services at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals recently received very positive feedback in an annual, national survey completed by women who have given birth at the hospitals. Lancashire Teaching Hospitals ranked 12th out of 69 hospitals nationally; signifying huge improvements in services and care provision. Notable positive feedback for the services included being offered a choice of where to have the baby, being given the help they needed by midwives, having their partner able to stay with them as long as they wanted, being able to see the midwife as much as they wanted, and receiving support or advice about feeding their baby during evenings and weekends.

Cathy continued: “We are truly committed as a team to improving our services and will continue to consider ways to enhance our service to ensure that we are providing the best possible services and care for new mothers, babies and their families.”
