Meet the Unsung Heroes of the NHS

Three unheralded ‘behind-the-scenes’ NHS workers have been recognised for their contribution as part of GoToJobBoard’s annual Unsung Heroes awards.

Each year, people are invited to send in their nominations for non-medical NHS staff who have gone above and beyond to make a significant impact at their place of work. After receiving almost 80 nominations from across the country, the winners have been revealed as James Long, Rehanah Sadiq and Enid Dunn.

James is the Facilities and Patient Experience Manager at London’s St Pancras Hospital. He was nominated by colleagues for improving the lives of patients whose mobility has been restricted by illness. He has set up a weekly film afternoon for patients using DVDs donated by the BBC, as well as arranging for a magician to come in a provide live entertainment. One of his workmates commented: “Not a day goes by without James making patients smile or laugh and he makes me feel like a valued member of staff.” James said: “I think there’s a lot of opportunity for rewarding efforts like this and it was great to be recognised.”

Rehanah is the Senior Muslim Chaplain at Birmingham Women’s Hospital, and was nominated by a colleague who felt her department “always gets overlooked”. She was put forward for her work supporting patients on happy occasions, but also in times of great need, for example if they are unwell or in cases where they have lost a baby. She was nominated by Mobeen Shairbano, who is currently training under her. Mobeen said: “When I have shadowed her and visited patients on the wards the service they receive from her is from her heart and soul. Words cannot describe the impact she has on patients and families.” Rehanah said: “The award is brilliant, and it’s wonderful to see chaplaincy being promoted within the NHS. Many people are not aware of what chaplains can do and the role we can play in healthcare. Many people think of us as purely a religious service and wouldn’t even think to reach out.” “It’s great to be recognised for the work we do here at Birmingham Women’s Hospital.”

Enid is a volunteer at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust’s Breast Services department, who was nominated by a member of staff for her work helping patient’s recovering from surgery. She was admitted to hospital for surgery three years ago and was discharged with a drain to her wound. Enid designed a bag to help carry the drain in a way that promoted dignity and early mobilisation for patients. This helped her to such an extent that she set about designing similar bags for other patients. Staff Engagement Lead Sandy Wilkie said: “These bags are greatly appreciated by all of the patients who are given them. They are beautiful and made to a very high standard. Over the last three years Enid has made thousands of bags, maintaining a steady supply throughout the year complete with seasonal touches.” Enid, who funds the service entirely out of her own pocket, said: “I’m ecstatic and over the moon to be a winner. It’s so lovely to be recognised and nominated.”

In addition to the recognition from their friends and colleagues, the winners will receive an iPad mini courtesy of GoToJobBoard.

GoToJobBoard’s Mark Cherry said: “These awards are all about recognising those who selflessly put their time and energy into making others feel good. We know that 49% of jobs in the NHS are carried out by non-clinical staff, so we hope that by giving them this special award they will see how highly their colleagues value them and be inspired to keep providing comfort and happiness to patients wherever they can.”
