Matron Emergency pathway

To improve patient experience and reduce congestion in our emergency department the Ambulatory Emergency Care Unit at the Royal Blackburn Hospital has introduced a new pathway for patients presenting with low risk chest pain.

Our paramedics review the patients ECG and pain score in the ambulance and divert to AECU if no Acute changes are present.

If the patient self refers to ED the consultant reviews the ECG and again if no Acute changes are present the patient is fast tracked to AECU for the assessment to be completed.

95%of patients are seen and discharged in under 4 hours from a AECU

It has proved to be a safe effective pathway for the highest reason for patients attending the Emergency Department
