Language of Autism

A few years back in County Durham we co-produced a survey with the eXtreme group, a fabulous bunch of neurodiverse young people (Investing in Children charity). This is because they (alongside the majority of autistic people and advocacy groups) wanted people to stop using the term Autistic Spectrum Disorder or ASD to describe autism.

We analysed the data from nearly 600 people and it was very clear, not only do autistic people prefer the term Autism but they significantly disliked the term Disorder. The young people wanted others to know about the findings so we secured some funding to co-produce a short film that has now been embedded into various training across the country and has been viewed thousands of times.

I was extremely lucky that a member of the group co-delivered a presentation about the project at 2 national conferences.
