Innovative and unique new service supporting patients

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has launched an innovative new service to support major trauma patients during their hospital stay and throughout their journey to recovery.

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals has partnered with Headway, the brain injury association for Preston and Chorley, to develop a unique service that is the first of its kind in the North West.

As the regional Major Trauma Centre, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals provides life and limb saving treatment for patients throughout Lancashire and South Cumbria.

The new Major Trauma Patient Support Service delivered by Headway has now launched to support patients, and their families following a traumatic incident or event.

Headway will now visit Royal Preston Hospital twice a week to speak to patients about anything from housing and financial issues, to legal advice to lost items after having been in an accident.

All of these things have a huge impact on patients when they have been badly injured, and this service enables anxious patients to have their mind put at ease by dedicated professionals who are there to offer advice and help in any way that they can.

Karen Haworth, Major Trauma Clinical Manager at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals said: “The new Major Trauma Patient Support Service is already making a massive difference to our patients. Events or incidents that result in major trauma injuries are unexpected, sudden and often have catastrophic life changing consequences for the patient and their families. Access to information regarding housing, benefits, financial and legal services is therefore of paramount importance in order to provide our patients and their families with the support they need.”
