Hospital alcohol team - reducing hospital admissions due to alcohol related issues featured image
In 2013 we established a team to tackle the increase in patients being admitted to our hospital with alcohol related issues. In 2010/2011 alcohol related harm cost the NHS in Lancashire £141.92 million. In central Lancashire alcohol related hospital admissions have increased each year from 2005 up to 2011. In 2010/2011 Preston had the highest rate of hospital admissions for alcohol related liver disease in the North West.

Our alcohol liaison team comprises four clinical nurse specialists who provide a seven day service across two hospitals.2015-02-20_54e760b68cf97_Alcoholliaisonteam.JPG

The team has successfully reduced the rate of increase in alcohol related hospital emergency admissions, reduced the length of stay in hospital for alcohol related issues, and improved access and engagement with primary care and community specialist substance misuse services.

The team is training nursing staff throughout the hospital to identify and refer patients who may benefit from alcohol related support.

In a year the service received 1061 referrals, and saved a total of 641 bed days so is having a good impact on hospital capacity.

More importantly the team is supporting people with alcohol related conditions and problems to get the support they need to live a healthier life.
