The Theatre Department at Furness General Hospital has developed easy read grab and go guides for new starters, students, locums and agency staff as part of a Wave 9 Listening into Action scheme.

The visually aided guides are a bullet point, step-by-step actions for each emergency procedure and are now kept in a central area in Theatre at Furness General Hospital.

Two guides which have been trialled are Malignant Hyperpyrexia and Upper GI Bleed.

The team has also taken steps to correctly sign drug storage boxes and cupboards relating to each condition. This has improved patient safety and saved time for staff. Boxes for these two emergencies have been introduced which have the relevant immediate drugs and equipment, contents check list and has been added to the daily assurance files.

Next steps for the team are to:
Add more visually aided guides to support staff, save them time and improve patient safety and care.

To look at introducing this way of working in the theatres at Westmorland General Hospital and Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

Our new Sepsis trolley has recently arrived so the next grab and go guide for Sepsis will be up and running very soon!
