Game sets from cash for QMC Wards

Problem Some wards at QMC have limited access to television at the bedside which means patients can more easily become bored, distracted and dissatisfied with their care.

Impact Unsettled patients tend to have a worse experience. They are more at risk of falls and less content and involved in their recuperation. Idea At the monthly DDT shared governance meeting nurses from four wards at QMC identified this as a common problem when reviewing patient survey feedback. The local Shared Governance Group decided to bring in a set of activities, board games and portable DVD players so patients feel more relaxed and content. Benefits Staff working one to one with the most vulnerable patients have an additional way of engaging and interacting through, for example, a game of cards or a board game. Patients are more content and comfortable. More settled patients who are less bored are less likely to put themselves at higher risk of a fall. Louise Ormiston, Staff Nurse, F21
