FREE training for healthcare professionals in Croydon: the role of arts & culture in healthcare and social prescribing

Performing Medicine, specialist in arts-based healthcare training and research, is delivering free online courses for healthcare professionals across Croydon; helping to build an understanding of how arts and culture can play a key role in healthcare and social prescribing.

Launching on Thursday 10th March, and running weekly throughout March, the modular course is open to all GPs, nurse practitioners and other professionals working in health and social care in Croydon.

Amy Mallett, project manager, Performing Medicine, said, “Cross-sector working is key to rich social prescribing offerings across communities, and our course aims to improve awareness of how the cultural sector improves health outcomes of individuals and communities. In March we are opening this to all health and social care workers in Croydon; providing professionals with an opportunity to appreciate and understand each other’s worlds.”

Supported by Arts Council England, there are three online sessions, plus a further face-to-face networking opportunity

Participants will explore how engaging with arts and culture can address a range of health challenges, reduce health inequalities, and empower people to take responsibility for management of their physical and mental wellbeing. Participants will also be introduced to the work of artists and arts organisations in Croydon.

There will be a focus on the self-care and wellbeing of healthcare professionals, as well as honing verbal and non-verbal skills to support effective communication with colleagues, patients and the wider healthcare community. Most importantly, the programme will build confidence around starting conversations about the potential of arts and culture to improve health and wellbeing.

The course culminates with a networking day at Stanley Arts. In this event healthcare professionals, social prescribers, artists and arts organisations will come together

to explore opportunities to build a cross-sector professional community, and co-create social prescribing offers that meet the needs of local communities.
