Foreign language videos for maternity patients

There are a huge number of foreign language written resources for women in labour created by the Obstetric Anaesthetists Association (OAA) at www.labourpains.com.

We found although these are helpful, they do not help the most vulnerable group of women who may not be able to read.

Literacy rates in many of the worlds poorest countries is very low for women (often less than 40% literacy in women in SE Asia and sub saharan Africa), and so we sought to transfer this written information into visual form, so this most vulnerable group do not suffer from inequality due to lack of information.

With the generous help of St Georges Hospital charity, the St Georges obstetric anaesthetists have created a video describing epidurals for labour pain relief which is available in English, Urdu, Cantonese, Mandarin, Shona, Italian, Japanese, Ukrainian, Polish, Bengali, Greek, Tamil, Arabic and Spanish.

Versions coming soon in many other languages like Hindi, Marathi, Malay, Somali, Russian and others.

They explain the process, as well as the risks and benefits of epidurals, allowing women to give consent and understand the process they may soon go through.

This is openly available

and will soon be followed by similar videos on other maternity topics, supported by the OAA.
