Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has become the first hospital site in the UK to gain access to the latest piece of surgical equipment for microscopic neurosurgery.

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is the first hospital in the UK to have purchased not just one, but two, ZEISS KINEVO 900 microscopes.

This innovative equipment merges the functionalities of a surgical microscope with vastly improved visualisation and in-situ images to gain greater certainty, while using robotics to reduce manual effort in a unique, new way.

The equipment uses robotic assisted surgery to improve stability and provide greater ergonomics.

The machine also contains a micro-inspection tool which enables surgeons to see at different and more improved, larger angles to what they have previously been able to see.

The unique microscope has been designed to deliver more functionalities than any other surgical microscope available today.

Sabita Nutakki, Theatres Manager at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals said: “Neurosurgery is always at the forefront of modern technology. We are very excited to work with this new robotic device as it helps us to keep abreast of innovative solutions, and will benefit both our patients, as well as our staff. We have already had a glimpse of what future possibilities it may open up for us and have had very successful surgeries already.”
