Within my workplace we have a number of staff who have experience in the care sector but are new to dementia care, and also use the services of the NHS staff bank.
In order to ensure that our clients receive the best possible care, I have developed a Dementia Awareness resource for new starters which I deliver to all new staff on our ward.
This training takes 1 hour to deliver and covers basic elements of dementia care, explaining different types of dementia with a focus on communication.
Based on the person centred approach, I relate all aspects of this resource to real experiences and encourage participants to take an active roll within the session, which generates open and honest communication.
The resource was compiled from my own experience with references from Best Practice in Dementia Care (Sterling University), Dementia Friends Champion Workbook (Alzheimer's Society) along with research compiled within my university studies.
Feedback so far is very encouraging with positive feedback gained from all disciplines and will hopefully promote a better understanding of dementia care and improved quality of care.
