This is least evident when a health problem mystifies the consultants - medically unexplained symptoms. Such a patient does not need to have a mental disorder (and often does not) to require joint assessment by paediatrician and psychologist, psychotherapist or psychiatrist.
Decades of good liaison has shown how collaboration between us can - by helping to make better sense of unexplained conditions - reduce unnecessary investigations and admissions, and improve child health.
Paediatric mental health teams are scattered around the UK but too little is known about this work to make it an expected part of every paediatric department.
