In the centre of the building there was an Inflatable Colon, this enabled residents to enter a bowel to demonstrate in a clear visible way how early diagnosis can save lives.
It was Bowel Cancer Awareness month so working with the Oxfordshire Commissioning Group and Bowel Cancer UK to provide local information and advice on healthy eating
The weather was clear with only light showers, we estimate just over 60 people attended, it would still be better if more residents did turn up and I have asked all attendees to give me suggestions to how we can approach this and improve overall attendance.
The BBC Radio Oxford broadcasts during the morning really helped to bring people forward and it was fantastic to have their help.
44 people came through the inflatable colon; 2 people who came through said they were 60 and had received their test kits but had not done them. They promised to do them when they got home (or ask for new ones if they were out of date).
2 people said they intended to visit their GP as they felt they may have some symptoms.
However approximately 10 - 15 people said they visited the colon as they had had polyps removed, had Crohns or colitis but wanted to find out more as they were uncertain as to what they were and why the polyps were removed.
“The atmosphere was pleasant, the people on the stands were highly competent and passionate about their services and it had a lovely 'collegiate' atmosphere. It's just a shame more people didn't come to such a great event.”
