Championing safety for our patients

A member of staff at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has received a national award for her implementation of a new initiative to improve patient safety.

Connie Sharrock, Medicines Safety Officer at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, has been awarded with a Pharmacy Professional of the Month Award by The Clinical Pharmacy Congress.

Connie was nominated for the award by her colleagues for her work to promote medicines safety, promoting error reporting and establishing a network of medicines safety champions at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

Each clinical area has been invited to nominate a champion who will, with the support of the network, promote medicine safety and learning from incidents. The champions meet monthly on each site to share learning and good practice.

Connie is also highly motivated to improve the way staff report, investigate and learn from medication incidents. Connie has introduced an initiative in the pharmacy department called “Connie’s Gold Stars” which rewards staff for recognising and preventing harm and reporting medication errors to allow shared learning.

Connie said: “I am thrilled and honoured to have received the Pharmacy Professional of the Month Award, and am glad that all my hard work has been recognised and is truly making a difference to the care that we provide.”
