Survivorship, it's a word we hear frequently in relation to cancer care and ongoing support.
Whilst exploring the resources available to support people living with cancer or the consequences of cancer treatment, I found this website http://www.chris-cancercommunity.com/
Chris is a cancer survivor and his lived experience is that support services for people affected by cancer outside the clinical environment are extremely sparse.
Chris is using his personal experience and business skills to help connect people around the world who are affected by cancer, to help remove the feeling of isolation.
Chris explains that 'There is a lot of good work going on, but it's not very 'joined up.' What do you think? I think he's probably right.
I watched a number of the video resources which are available on the website and this one, listening to Chris and understanding his journey made rather sobering viewing
I read Chris's most recent blog http://www.chris-cancercommunity.com/and-still-they-come/ in which he describes a speaking engagement at a support group and the exceptional impact that this group has on the lives of those who find their way to it.
Finding this website has made me re assess my perception of 'what' survivorship really means and how as nurses working with individuals on a cancer journey maybe a different focus is needed.
I had the privilege to speak with Chris on the phone last week and he was considered, realistic, humorous, down to earth and very driven. I have the feeling that this is going to be the beginning of a great collaboration- so watch this space!
In the meantime have a browse and see what you think..... I can maybe feel a #FabChangeDay campaign coming on!
