We're AWProud of ourselves: the power of peer-to-peer recognition

We all know that positive feedback makes us feel good and spurs us on to do good work for our service users.

This communications campaign uses the power of a simple ‘thank you’ to celebrate AWP's values, raise morale and create a culture of pride. Our AWProud campaign makes it quick, easy and fun for staff to recognise good practice, great internal customer service or the unique personal qualities of a colleague - all using existing technology.

At the heart of our peer-to-peer campaign is our own, intranet-based ‘moonpig.com’. The easy-to-use facility allows staff to send a personalised message to say ‘thank you’, ‘well done’ or ‘you made me proud’ to anyone in the Trust. This could be for anything, big or small: for saving a life, for having a brilliant idea, or just for being a good-humoured colleague who makes others look forward to coming into work.

The recipient can download the message, print it and share it in supervision and appraisal.

We know that people don’t go into healthcare for glory, so we developed artwork which focused on the idea of staff as ‘unsung heroes’.

The hand-drawn style is quirky but not showy, and works well on a colourful poster or on a simple black and white print-out for a portfolio or noticeboard. The format, process and look were all developed with input from staff groups and we built in lots of their suggestions.

We launched the campaign to coincide with the publication of excellent community mental health survey results – if service users think you’re good, then that’s definitely something to feel proud of!

We communicated with staff at all levels and asked managers and senior leaders to use the campaign. The wave of messages that was unleashed not only made senders and recipients feel great, but helped whole teams feel appreciated for what they do. Some set up noticeboards especially for Proud messages, and lots of people started using the artwork in their emails signature to demonstrate their pride. We were delighted that 350 messages were sent in the first 10 days.

Here’s how they made people feel:

“Getting an AWProud message brightens your day and makes you feel reinvigorated, like, ‘yes, we can do it!’.”

"I felt immensely proud and valued."

"Receiving the certificate was a happy moment…as this proves my hard work has been noticed and appreciated by my team."

The campaign continues to build and we are now looking at seasonal themes to keep it fresh and fun throughout the year.
