November 2014 the Royal College of General Practitioners and West of England Academic Health Science Network (WEAHSN) co-hosted a conference to raise awareness of the challenges facing adults suffering autism. Doctor Carole Buckley, GP and national lead for Autism for the Royal College led the event with support from David Evans, Quality Improvement Programme Manager at the WEAHSN

Attendees included GPs, secondary care providers, commissioners and patient groups. Speakers at the conference included: Baroness Angela Browning – whose own son suffers from Autism Lyn Watkins – an autism patient who has 2 adult sons who were diagnosed with autism whilst they were children, Pauline Heslop - Reader in Intellectual Disabilities Research and Director of Doctoral Research Degrees at University of Bristol Doctor Peter Carpenter – Psychiatrist

The speakers successfully emphasised the following key Issues as barriers to driving forward improvements:

 Low priority for commissioners

 Lack of staff taking awareness training

 Lack of support/advice for GP’s

 The ‘system’ is not joined up

 Lack of support for carers

Delegates then used some Quality Improvement science and tools to undertake Root cause analysis of the issues in order to develop and prioritise potential solutions.

These outputs are being considered alongside the outputs from similar events being planned in other UK locations so a comprehensive action plan can be developed.
