Taught in nearly 100 centres around the UK, APLS continues to be the leading course for paediatric specialists with over 83,000 clinicians having completed the course since its inception in 1993.

The APLS blended learning package is used to demonstrate mandatory life support skills required in the RCPCH curriculum with key capabilities being covered. It is an important course for paediatric clinicians as it includes eight hours of practical training in 16 different simulation scenarios. Supporting the practical elements of the course, APLS includes additional resources including the course manual, e-library including video resources for rarely seen conditions, and e-learning modules which all form part of the package as well as course updates for four years following completion of the course. APLS is a fully blended learning package. The face-to-face training is based on team working to create a realistic, engaging platform where candidates act in their own roles within their team in a safe practice environment.

Faculty for APLS are senior paediatric clinicians with experience in medical leadership and have been trained through our AoME accredited instructor training programme, GIC. Each course includes a Faculty of 2:1 providing candidates with personalised mentoring. The Faculty carefully balance continuous assessment with briefing and debriefing team behaviours to ensure candidates go away with real learnings they can take back to their workplace.

Clinicians who have taken the course range across teams and departments, creating a common language within what can often be a changeable environment. APLS provides a clear and recognisable approach to the management of paediatric emergencies and allows for a common language between peers.

Now at sixth edition, the APLS Working Group includes paediatric clinicians from around the world ensuring a global perspective is considered and international evidence is captured and reflected in each edition.

Stephanie Smith, APLS Working Group Chair and Emergency Paediatric Consultant and Clinical Director Nottingham Children’s Hospital said “this is a fantastic achievement for APLS and the team involved as it is testament to the extensive coverage of emergency and trauma core training and education in the specialty.

She concluded: “APLS has evolved in the twenty-five years since inception and the ancillary resources not only underpin the course content but are continually available to support the candidate and act as an immediate point of reference.”

In a statement from the RCPCH, Vice President for Education & Professional Development said “The RCPCH are pleased to provide Endorsement of the Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG) Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) course.

APLS provides the knowledge and skills necessary for recognition and effective treatment and stabilisation of children with life threatening emergencies, using a structured, sequential approach and aims to teach, practice and test the acquisition and use of these technical skills”.
