Why we created whiteballoon

The idea for whiteballoon grew out of our own experiences as well as those of family and friends. In the days following the death of a loved one, when it can be hard even to function, we saw a need for a gentle, on-line resource that brings everything together in one place.

whiteballoon is a quiet space where people can reflect, gather their thoughts, and make informed decisions about how best to honour and celebrate the life of their loved one. We want to make it as simple as possible to discover the many different ways to say goodbye and to find and connect with the individuals and organisations that can help every step of the way.

How whiteballoon can help

whiteballoon is a free, easy to access, online resource that can help people to understand the choices available to them, and to feel more in control. We have…

Information

Clear, concise information about what to do when someone dies, how to plan a funeral or celebration of life, plus information for the increasing number of people who wish to plan ahead.

Inspiration

whiteballoon’s Inspiration pages have an eclectic mix of ideas and images to help people to understand what choices are available and where to find what they are looking for. There is a carefully curated selection of poems, readings, music and prayers for funerals, memorials and celebrations of life.

Free Planning Tools

Free planning tools enable people to gather, record and share ideas and information:

Checklists – for What to do when someone dies, Planning a Funeral and Planning Ahead.

Personalised Ideas Folder – in which to save information, including ideas and images from the Inspiration pages, which can then be shared with family, friends, the funeral director or celebrant.

Budget Planner – helping people to keep track of costs.

Attendees Form – on which to record names of people attending and other relevant information such as their email address or, for example, dietary or access requirements.

Letter of Funeral Wishes – a template on which to record funeral wishes. This can be printed out, completed by hand, and kept with other important documentation.

Bereavement Support

There are links to a wide range of organisations that provide bereavement support, together with a selection of books, podcasts and blogs that help people understand more about grief and bereavement and, hopefully, to help them to feel less alone.

Planning Ahead

Information and guidance for the increasing number of people who wish to plan ahead. It can be reassuring for people, and those closest to them, to know that their affairs are in order and their wishes known.
