“Integrating suitability for teaching into an electronic health record”,

A group of staff at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have had their educational article published within an international medical journal. The article, entitled “Integrating suitability for teaching into an electronic health record”, discusses how electronic health records (EHR) could be used within education to engage and interest students and the future workforce of the NHS. The article has been published on MedEdPublish, an e-journal sharing best practice and ideas amongst academics, teachers, clinicians, researchers and students. The article was written collectively by Himanshu Singh, Respiratory Consultant; Yvonne Thomson, Clinical Placement Facilitator Lead; Madhavi Paladugu, Hospital Dean and Paediatric Consultant; Nick Wood, Chief Clinical Information Officer and Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist and Alexander Woywodt, Associate Dean and Consultant Nephrologist at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. AMEE MedEdPublish is an online journal published by the Association of Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) that enables academics, teachers, clinicians, researchers and students to publish their experiences, views and research findings relating to teaching, learning and assessment in medical and health professions education. Alexander Woywodt, Consultant Nephrologist and Associate Undergraduate Dean at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, said: “It is really exciting and means a lot to the team to have our work recognised and acknowledged in this international publication. We work hard to ensure the medical education our students receive is of a high standard and we have published a number of educational publications previously. It is always great to see when the team develops another project from an early new idea to publication in a prestigious journal.” Dr Himanshu Singh, Respiratory Consultant at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, who developed the idea, said: “I am delighted by the acceptance of the project as an e-publication and the interest being generated around this and will be incorporating it more widely from the next academic year. Hopefully the utility of this will help a wider community of teachers and medical students.” Madhavi Paladugu, Hospital Dean and Paediatric Consultant, added: “I am delighted with the international recognition of the excellent work done by my team and fully support the project to be extended and utilised more widely within the hospitals.”
